Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about robots.txt and XML sitemaps.

What is a robots.txt file?

Robots.txt is a plain text file placed in the root of your website that tells search engine crawlers (like Googlebot) which pages or sections they can or cannot access. It's a directive (a polite request), not a strict command — respectful bots follow it, but malicious ones ignore it.

What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important URLs of your website, along with metadata like last modification date, change frequency, and priority. It helps search engines discover and crawl your pages more efficiently, especially new sites with few backlinks.

Where do I place these files?

Both files go in the root directory of your website. They should be accessible at:

For Blogger, you can set custom robots.txt in Settings → Crawlers and index. For WordPress, use an SEO plugin or upload to the root via FTP.

Should I use robots.txt or meta noindex?

Use robots.txt to prevent crawling (saves bandwidth). Use meta noindex to prevent indexing (keeps page out of search results). For maximum control, use both. Note: robots.txt blocks crawling, so if you use noindex, don't also block that page in robots.txt — the crawler needs to see the noindex tag.

How many URLs can a sitemap have?

According to Google's guidelines, a single sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must be under 50 MB uncompressed. For larger sites, split into multiple sitemaps and use a sitemap index file.

How do I submit my sitemap to Google?

Go to Google Search Console → select your property → "Sitemaps" in the left menu → enter sitemap.xml → Submit. Google will begin crawling and indexing your pages within 24-72 hours.
