Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about robots.txt files.

What is a robots.txt file?

Robots.txt is a plain text file placed in your website's root directory that tells search engine crawlers which pages or sections they can or cannot access. It follows the Robots Exclusion Protocol — a standard format used by all major search engines. It's a directive (a polite request), not a strict command.

Where do I upload robots.txt?

The file must be at the root directory: https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt

Blogger: Settings → Crawlers and indexing → Enable custom robots.txt → paste content
WordPress: Use Yoast/RankMath SEO plugins, or upload via FTP/File Manager
Custom sites: Upload to your web server's public_html directory

Does robots.txt prevent indexing?

No. Robots.txt prevents crawling, not indexing. If another site links to your blocked page, Google may still index it (without the content). To truly prevent indexing, use the <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tag. For maximum control, use both — but don't block a page in robots.txt if you also want to use noindex, since the crawler needs to see the noindex tag.

What is the difference between Allow and Disallow?

Disallow tells crawlers NOT to access a path.
Allow gives permission to access a path.

When both rules match a URL, the more specific (longer) rule wins. Example:
Disallow: /private/
Allow: /private/public-page
Here, /private/public-page is allowed because the Allow rule is more specific.

Should I block CSS and JS files?

No, not recommended. Google needs to see your CSS and JS to properly render and evaluate your pages for mobile-friendliness and Core Web Vitals. Blocking them can hurt your rankings. The only time to block them is if you have specific security concerns.

Is this robots.txt generator free?

Yes, 100% free with no signup, no payment, and no limits. Generate unlimited robots.txt files for any number of websites.
